Extreme Dieting and Hair Loss

Today we received an email from a woman who was very upset as she has been on an extreme diet program and is now dealing with hair loss issues.  Sure, she lost some weight but she now has other problems to deal with.  Fortunately it’s just her hair that’s in crisis, it could have been something far more serious!

We see this a lot and while loosing weight is important to avoid a whole host of health issues; loosing one’s hair in the process is not something people bargain for.  In this  case, this person said she went on a “fasting” protocol and in checking out the companies web site, it was obvious in reading the ingredients in the products, there were gross deficiencies in calories, vitamins, minerals and protein. Just as with gastric by-pass surgery; when nutrients are so restricted, usually the hair and nails are where the problems begin to show up first.

We promote Isagenix Nutritional Cleansing for health and weight loss. Unlike the extreme diets out there, Isagenix focuses on replenishing the body with minerals, vitamins and clean protein.  Yes, the body is cleansed of the bad things such as chemicals and toxins that promote weight gain, but the body is then supported with high-grade dense nutrition.  So, it is cleaned up and built up at the same time.  We have been promoting this program for over four years and have seen some pretty amazing results with it.  Just this morning we heard from a mom who’s son was not recovering from mononucleosis.  He had lost a lot of weight over a five month period and nothing the doctors were doing for him was helping.  His mom put him on the Isagenix products and within 3 weeks he was feeling much better and gaining back the weight he had lost.  Those who need to gain weight will gain; those who need to loose will loose weight!  The body is so wonderful, give it what it needs and it will do what it needs to do!

So, if you are looking for a healthy weight loss protocol and want to enhance your health at the same time, consider nutritional cleansing.  Instead of loosing your hair you will have hair that is probably healthier than it’s ever been and your nails will be strong and beautiful.  Beauty starts from the inside out and when you cleanse and replenish you will be amazed at how great you look and feel!

Diminish Aging

Most would agree that in today’s world, with food-less food, it’s important to supplement one’s diet to assure optimal health.  For those committed to good health, supplementing with good food is cheap insurance!

While no one is going to live forever, it is important to look and feel your best so that you can live a quality life as you age.

Several months ago, Isagenix released a new product called Ageless ActivesAgeless Actives uses advanced, scientific technology to diminish the signs of aging from the inside out.  The propriety blend of ingredients include CoQ10, Vitamin D3 and Resveratrol,  as well as adaptogens,  botanicals and other antioxidants; all which have been demonstrated to help slow the progressive degeneration of the body at the cellular level.

Ageless Actives helps combat the effects of cellular aging which is the result of free radical damage on cell proteins, membranes and DNA.  What we see as signs of aging, wrinkles, loss of lean body mass, bone strength, memory loss and reduced physical capacity, it “cellular aging.”

The CoQ10 in Ageless Actives contains a patent-pending, liquid   form which is 800% more absorbable than other forms.

Ageless Actives contains 1,000 IU per serving of Vitamin D3 to enhance the body’s absorption of calcium and to help maintain a strong cardiovascular system.

250mg per serving of trans-Resveratrol is used in Ageless Actives. That is the equivalent  of 100 glasses of red wine!  While the 100 glasses of red wine might be more fun (or not), the supplement is much more practical.

Ageless Actives contains red grape and pomegranate extracts to help protect cells from free radicals.

Last, but not least, Ageless Actives contains adaptogens which increase the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety and fatigue.  Wolfberry, ashwagandha and tumeric are all found in Ageless Actives.

Most of these ingredients have been widely researched and are found to be nutrients that support energy production at the cellular level and promote optimum health, support cardiovascular health and help the body maintain youthfulness.  The adaptogens increase resistance to stress, anxiety and fatigue.

We are in the beauty industry but we realize beauty begins from the inside out.  Youth also begins from the inside out.  Here is a supplement that works to regenerate your body at the cellular level using the latest bio-active ingredients.  So, since it’s about youth AND beauty, we are all over this one!

What’s New With Hair Systems?

We used to call them wigs and hair pieces.  Today we refer to them as hair systems.  That’s one thing that is new.  In the old days (60′s) wearing a wig or hair system, was like wearing a hat.  Very cumbersome and very hot!  And, it pretty much was obvious that you were wearing a wig.  Until the past few years, the biggest changes in the wigs have been with the caps.  Where once they were heavy and hot, today they are light and airy, very comfortable to wear.  Synthetic wigs have come a long way, available in the trendiest styles and in many cases, it’s very difficult to tell that they are synthetic.

A few years ago, a new product hit the market and was well received.  That product was Cyberhair.  Cyberhair was a scientific breakthrough offering outstanding performance, rich colors, and natural shine.  Cyberhair feels light and healthy for those just beginning to thin or for those with more advanced hair loss.  Cyberhair is available as a hair system and in micro extensions.  One of the most exciting things about Cyberhair is that it LOVES water.  And ~ it can handle the salt and chlorine which allows you to play in the pool or go deep-sea diving in the tropics, while wearing your Cyberhair hair system!  Live your life to the fullest!

The new kid on the block is Vitalhair.  If you are thinking of getting new hair or additional hair, take a look at this.  Obviously you want the perfect match to your lifestyle. You want your hair to be second nature… as in second only to your natural hair, and not by much. You need to find your hair happy place, but these days, that can take some extra legwork.

Vitalhair is the newest and latest innovation in hair technology. Created to give you the hair you want and the freedom to live your life. Vitalhair is available for non-surgical custom-made hair restoration, specifically designed to match your way of life and the hairstyle you want.

The secret lies in the unique construction of every hair, built as a perfect duplicate of your own hair, making it effortlessly blend in with your own and creating a totally natural appearance.

What makes Vitalhair the next hair? Vitalhair was designed to fit your lifestyle. Whether at work or at play, in the office or in the pool, Vitalhair is worry free. In the elements of Mother Nature or under the bright lights, Vitalhair keeps you naturally looking your best. Keep your style or change your style, the choice is yours.

Carefree, worry free, limitless… Both Cyberhair and Vitalhair have this to offer!

Hair Support System

Let’s talk about one of the most basic items for those experiencing thinning hair,  or who’s hair needs revitalization.  Since this is where our hair replacement specialist would start someone experiencing compromised hair, hopefully you will find this useful and interesting information as well as something to pass along should you know someone in this situation.

Hair Support System cannot be purchased over the counter, it is sold in select salons; typically those dealing with thinning hair and hair loss in men and women.  Hair Support offers the latest technological procedures to cleanse blocked follicles, and to stimulate the scalp, increasing blood circulation.  This revitalizes the hair follicles and releases dormant hair ~ which has been trapped underneath the scalp by a build-up of oil and hair care products.

This product can dramatically improve the condition of your hair, protect it against further loss and may also foster new hair growth!  My daughter developed a bald patch on her hair, about the size of a quarter.  I immediately got her on Hair Support and the issue was resolved fairly quickly!  Needless to say, she was estatic!

Even in a situation where the hair loss is medically-related chemotherapy), clients have reported their hair returning in half the diagnosed time.

The bottom line is this.  A healthy scalp and stronger hair encourages your natural hair to grow.  Even if slow hair growth (slower than “normal”) you might want to try this product.

Psychological Aspects of Hair Loss

Hair loss very often affects a person’s self-image, self-esteem and quality of life.  For many of us our hair is very important to our physical attractiveness, whether male or female.

Studies have shown that people with “normal” amounts of hair are seen as more sympathetic, and more successful.  Those with genetic hair loss are seen as older and less desirable.  There is no evidence to support that hair loss causes discrimination in employment or that political candidates are discriminated against by voters based on the amount of hair they have.

Typically, women are more embarrassed, distressed, disturbed and concerned about hair loss and thinning hair than men.  They usually have lower self-esteem and more social problems than men over hair loss issues. Women will feel more uncomfortable in the presence of other women in addition to the presence of men.  Thinning hair and hair loss can lead to problems with sexual intimacy.    Hair loss can be very stressful for women and consequently for those they live with.    A woman may feel less attractive and out of place in social situations.  Lower self-esteem and body-image issues appear to affect older women to a larger degree than the younger women.  The degree of the thinning hair as well as marital status all come in to play and there are sometime other underlying psychological and personal problems which only exacerbate the problem since stress is a key player in thinning hair and hair loss.

There are those rare individuals who remain unconcerned and have never sought treatment or advice from the experts.  Sometimes when there are no health issues- some individual take it in stride as part of the aging process.  However, many of the baby boomers fight the hair loss issue kicking and screaming.  If you are one of those, Fantasia Salon has non-invasive solutions for you which won’t cost you your life savings.  It all starts with calling to schedule a free consultation.  One of our Hair Restoration Specialist will get to know you, your life style, and -together you can determine what the best solution for you would be.hope-chest-benfit-poster.jpg

Feed Your Hair

Is what you eat important in preventing hair loss?  Yes, it igood-food.jpegs.  We’ve talked about this before but I think it bears repeating.  Here are some very important nutrients which can help you maintain and keep a healthy head of hair.

  • Zinc:  One of the most popular hair loss prevention minerals is zinc.  Severe deficiencies of this mineral lead to baldness and scalp problems.  Those with less than normal levels of zinc in their bodies experience excessive loss of hair and premature graying.  Zinc is also valuable for minimizing the effects of stress- which promotes excess DHT production.  Foods rich in zinc include the following:  wheat germ, egg yolks, spinach, whole grains, mushrooms, and red meat.
  • Biotin:  this is one of the B complex components.  Biotin is sometimes referred to as Vitamin H or the hair vitamin.  It promotes hair growth while preventing hair loss.  Biotin assists in metabolizing fatty acids which fuel the growth and repair of hair follicles, thus reducing breakage caused by DHT.  Biotin also keeps hair strands from aging by moisturizing and nourishing them.  Good sources of biotin are eggs, milk, liver, kidney and yeast.
  • Protein:  Hair is almost 90% protein so it makes sense that this nutrient is among the top as a hair growth agent.  Many times you will see protein listed in shampoos and conditioners.  Proper protein can increase strand thickness by as much as 45%.  isa-pro.jpegSo, getting proper, good protein in your diet is probably the most common solution for thinning hair.  Common sources for protein include red meat, legumes, milk and eggs.  At Fantasia, a lot of us take Isagenix IsaPro which is an excellent source of clean, lean protein.
  • Vitamin A:  This has become famous as a popular vision enhancer.  It is an antioxidant which promotes healthy sebum production in your scalp.  Vitamin A allows your hair to produce the right amount of oil to moisturize the strands of hair but not so much that it blocks the pores of your scalp.  When sebum production is normal, it reduces the chance of DHT damage.  Great sources are yellow and orange vegetables, leafy greens, milk, fish oils and meat.
  • Vitamin E:  You’ve probably heard that Vitamin E is good for blood circulation.  Well, blood circulation aids in hair growth.  It is an antioxidant that promotes anti-aging, healthy blood flow and reduces the appearance of graying hair.  Cold-pressed vegetable oils, leafy greens, dried beans and nuts are all great sources of this nutrient.  Check with your doctor if you have high blood pressure before consuming large amounts of Vitamin E.

There are hair supplements which have all of the above mentioned nutrients in them although it’s good to make a conscious effort to get these things in your diet.  At Fantasia, hair-support.jpegwe sell Hair Support System which is just what the name implies, a system which includes hair and scalp conditioning as well as nutritional support.  For more information call or come in and talk with one of our Hair Replacement Specialist.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss comes under the heading of many different things.  Baldness, balding, male pattern baldness, male pattern hair loss, female balding, female pattern hair loss, hair loss, hair loss in women, and many other descriptions.

Listed here are the most common reasons for hair loss:

Androgenetic Alopecia – male or female pattern baldness.

Auto Immune Diseases – an immune reaction wich attacks the hair follicles, producing antibodies that attack these tissues as if they were foreign invaders.  Examples would be androgenenic alopecia and alopecia totalis, universalis.

Connective Tissue Disease – causes scarring of skin, loss of circulation to hair follicle and autoimmune reaction leading to temporary or permanent loss of hair.  Examples of this would be lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderman.

toxic-chemicals.jpegExposure to Toxic Chemicals – tobacco smoke contains hundreds of lethal and damaging chemicals which can accelerate normal hair loss and retard effects of medication and surgical restoration.  This effect can result either from being a smoker or from second hand smoke.

Radiation Exposure – Irradiation therapy or exposure to radiation from any source can cause localized or total hair loss, which may be permanent if the dose is high enough.

Iron Deficiency Anemia – very common with women but can also effect men.

Hormonal Changes - due to pregnancy, birth control pills and menopause.

Thyroid Disease – Either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid disease causes hair to become brittle and break resulting in localized or generalized loss.  Correction of the thyroid condition usually causes hair to regrow.

Stress – usually temporary and transient of the alopecia areata type.

Drug Interactions - certain vitamin prescription and over the counter, may have individual and non specific side effects of hair loss.  Usually, when the medication is discontinued, the hair regrows.  Tell your health care provider all medications you are taking and try to have one pharmacist fill all prescriptions and over the counter products.

Individual Reaction to Illness or a Personal Sensitivity to the Environment- alopecia can be a reaction to your environment where hair loss is almost like an allergic reaction.

Chemotherapychemotherapy.jpeg

Fungal and Bacterial Infections – impetigo and tinea capitis.

While this is a good list, it is not comprehensive.  Nutrition is huge when it comes to hair loss.  Poor diets, extreme diets and many other things contribute to hair loss.  If you or a loved one is suffering with hair loss or thinning hair, call Fantasia and let one of our Hair Replacement Specialist help you to determine what the best solution for you would be.

Looking Good on a Budget

Did you know it’s still possible to look great and fashionable even on a limited budget.  Here are some ideas on how you can stretch your “fashion budget”.

Begin by creating a realistic budget for the month.  Realistically, how much do you want to spend on clothes for work, after-work, and upcoming formal events?  How much on shoes?shoes.jpeg  Do you even need new shoes this month? (Perhaps an absurd question for some of us.) Decide first how much you can afford, taking into consideration your monthly bills.  If you do this on the front end, you won’t have to deal with buyers remorse leaving the checkout counter.

There are online coupons if you are not one to check out the Sunday coupon section of the newspaper.  Coolsavings.com offers coupons on everything from clothes to groceries.  Simply print out the coupons you want and used them just like the “old fashioned” kind.

Sign up for shopithome.com’s “Sale Mail”.  They will email you when brands you’ve chosen have gone on sale in your size and in your are.  It’s just like having a personal shopper.  Also, take advantage of sample sales in your area.  Dailycandy.com regularly lists designer sales in selected cities.fashion.jpeg

Resist the urge to splurge on the latest trendy bag or those designer shoes you’ve been eyeing.  Trendy designs ofter “inspire” similar version on more affordable labels.  Usually you only use the item for a season anyway.

And, although you have heard this many times, it bears repeating.  Shop off-season.  Just because Capri’s are in for summer and wide-leg trousers could be making a comeback for fall – doesn’t mean you should own them.  Many styles are simply unflattering for most people. If you stick to well-fitting basics you’ll get your money’s worth.

So as you can see, it is possible to look good on a budget!

Medications Cause Hair Loss

We’ve talked about the fact that various medications can cause hair loss.  Many prescription drugs can have dramatic effects regarding hair loss, particularly if nothing is done to counteract this side effect.  And sadly, in many cases, people are not told of this side effect on the front end.

rx.jpegCan we be specific with regard to which medications can cause hair loss?  Yes -  we can.  Here is a list of what the drugs would be taken for as well as the name of the drug.

  • Acne – Accutane
  • Blood – Anticoagulants – Panwarfin, Sofarin, Coumadin, Heparin
  • Cholesterol Lowering – Atronids, Lopid
  • Convulsion/Epilepsy – Anticonvulsants – Tridore
  • Antidepressants – Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, anafranil, Janimine, Tofranil, adapin, sinequan, Surmontil, Pamelor, Ventyl, Elavin, Endep, Norpramin, Pertofane, Vivactil, Asendin, Haldol
  • Diet – Amphetamines
  • Fungus – Antifungals
  • Glaucoma – Timoptic eye drops, Ocudose, XC
  • Gout – Allopurinol
  • Heart Beta blockers - Tenormin, Lopresser, Corgard, Inderal
  • Hormonal Conditions – Birth control pills, Progesterone, Estrogen, Male Androgenic hormones and all forms of testosterone, anabolic steriods, Prednisone and other steroids.
  • Inflammation - Arthritis drugs, NSAIDS such as Naprosyn, Anaprox, Indocin, Clinoril
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs such as  – Methotrexatem, Rheumatrex, Folex
  • Parkinson’s Disease – Levadopa
  • Thyroid disorders – Most all of the drugs prescribed for this
  • Ulcers - Both prescription and OTC, Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid

I would suspect, if you take the time to google it, you may find many more culprits that I have not mentioned.  If you are taking any of these medications and are noticing that your hair is beginning to thin, now you know why.  Perhaps you could consider alternatives to the medications or talk to your doctor about an alternative medication which would not drugs.jpegcause hair loss.

Knowledge is power, at least now you know what is contributing to the problem.
